"Chaos" is the term used to define the perceived random behavior of life itself. Chaos gives life to reality as we see it. Although the traditional Greek meaning of the word "Chaos" means the first state of the Universe, the popular interpretation these days is disorder or randomness.
If a system of Magick has an established path, a holy book or a list of rules, then it ceases to be part of Chaos Magick. Order immediately negates chaotic conditions. As a result of this, Chaos magick is very difficult to define. Some connect the initial chaos of the Universe (big bang theory, exploding matter, planets forming, etc) with the theory of Creation itself. So the word Chaos has come to mean he process that created the world itself.
Many of the things we see around us behave in a predicted, similar manner; tornado funnels, dust storms and water going down the drain are examples of such behavior. These may be thought of as completely different entities or processes and yet, they behave in a manner and seem to be following the same old rules.
Chaos Magick is the practice of life experiences based on Chaos theory. Meta-belief is a term used to define the concept that our belief shapes our own reality. Our belief is a tool
we usually use to change the course and direction of our life. Our beliefs are different from culture to culture, day to day. As we age, our beliefs change.
So who can say which belief is better than another? Many of our beliefs may coincide or cause conflict, in our minds as well as the mind of others around us. Yet, our reality seems to be destined to be the same. What we believe happens. This, in essence, defines Chaos Magick.
Chaos magick does not have any rules. Rules that are evidently important in other Magickal ways of life are not followed in Chaos magick. So people can experiment being good or evil as they like. The whole idea is that people may live and die and yet, in a short time, the world will return to the state that it was in before these changes. Also, there are no definitions for good or evil experiences!
So why has Chaos magick suddenly become so important? Since the 1970s, people have been experimenting with this idea that our belief is not as important as how we use that belief. If one person believes that God is the all powerful entity that controls the world and behaves in that particular way, they may reach the same goal as another person who believes in her own will power and strives to attain the same prize. So it is not the belief that takes you to the goal, rather, it's the process.
